Becky Hallman
Women’s Ministry
Born and raised on Oahu, Becky committed her life to Christ as a young girl but made a wholehearted commitment to the Lord during her college years. Becky met Bob at Calvary Chapel Honolulu where they worked in the youth and singles’ ministries until they realized they didn’t want to be single anymore! After marrying in 1987, they moved to the northeast where Pastor Bob graduated with a Masters of Divinity and Becky with a Masters in Special Education.
While in New York, the Lord graciously blessed Bob and Becky with two sons, Jonathan and Michael. In 1996, after ten years of ministry in the northeast, they responded to the Holy Spirit’s call to return to the Hawaiian Islands to pastor Calvary Chapel Kauai. Having spent many years growing up in the islands, they initially didn’t want to come home. But trusting God’s wisdom, they moved to Kauai and now they can’t imagine living anywhere else! They absolutely love Kauai and the wonderful work God is doing in and through the people at Calvary Chapel Kauai!
Becky’s busy life includes homeschooling her teenage sons, partnering with Pastor Bob in ministry, running the family’s housing rentals and hosting various dinners and Bible studies. She also oversees Women’s Ministry and partners with Pastor Bob in teaching Kauai Bible College’s discipleship classes, developing Ohana Fellowship Leaders and raising up and equipping women leaders in the areas of discipling, leading small groups and counseling.
In her spare time, Becky enjoys biking (she’s taken many bicycle tours in the islands and on the mainland), writing (she is currently finishing her first book), hiking, going on adventures with her family and spending time with friends! Being the only woman in the house, she’s learned to embrace all things “manly” – backwoods camping, handling firearms (she’s an excellent shot), dressing pigs, cooking wild game and doing very entertaining impressions (animals, guns, bombs) that make the men in her family proud!
Larry Barton
Ohana Fellowship Ministry
Larry, born and raised in Southern California, graduated from San Diego State University in 1976 with a B.A. degree in English. After spending seven years working in the sporting goods industry for two industry leaders, he launched his career in commercial real estate. Three years later, he met Sandi and they were married two years later in a Hawaiian style wedding in San Diego. It was shortly after meeting Sandi that Larry received Jesus Christ into his life as his personal Lord and Savior, a decision that forever changed him.
Sandi and Larry had a common love for Hawaii and moved to Kauai in 1994 to open a glass art gallery. After selling the business in 2007, Larry returned to real estate with Century 21 All Islands where he remains today. God blessed Larry and Sandi with 2 beautiful children, Tyler, now 13, and Mackenzie, 10. Larry served as treasurer and a deacon at North Shore Christian Church for seven years before he and Sandi felt the Lord calling them to Calvary Chapel Kauai in 2009. This opened the door for Larry to further utilize the gifts God has given him. Larry is actively involved in the church’s Ohana small group leadership team, men’s Bible study and orchestrating a new church membership directory.
What a blessing it has been for Larry and his family to be part of the CCK ohana. He feels privileged to be amongst such a diverse group of encouraging, committed and loving believers and church leadership, and looks forward to what God has planned for him in the future. Larry enjoys spending time with his family, coaching his kids’ sports, gardening and serving the Lord.
Catherine Pennell
Greeters’ Ministry
Catherine was born in New York City and raised on the East Coast. She considers herself “a city girl”, living most of her life in big cities from Manhattan to Washington D.C. to San Francisco. In 1995, Catherine graduated from University of Maryland with a degree in Economics and built a career in Investment Banking and Financial Software. In 2004, Catherine decided to give up her fast paced life and career to slow her life down and move to Kaua’i. It was here on Kaua’i and at Calvary Chapel Kaua’i (CCK) that Catherine committed her life to Christ and proclaimed Jesus as her Lord and Savior, changing her life forever.
In 2007, Catherine got involved in several ministries, including overseeing the Greeting Ministry for CCK and assisting the U-Turn for Christ Kaua’i ministry. In January 2008, the Lord brought John Pennell, the son of Pastor John Pennell of Calvary Chapel, Lake Villa, Illinois, to Kaua’i to do full time ministry with U-Turn. After five days of fasting and months of prayer, Catherine and John believed the Lord confirmed that they should marry. So in October 2008, Catherine and John united in marriage and continue to serve in various ministries together.
Catherine is gifted in several ways, one of which is her ability to relate and communicate with others. She is an outstanding overseer of the Greeting Ministry and together, John and Catherine serve on the CCK worship team. And as John leads worship for U-Turn, Catherine sings along side of him and serves behind the scenes. Recently, Catherine has been involved in Ohana Fellowship, leading a women’s small group Bible study and discipling young women.
Catherine is blessed with a career in sales working full time for a title and escrow company. She feels blessed to have her job and sees her clientele as her mission field. In her spare time, she loves dancing Christian hula and enjoys various forms of exercise like boxing, running, biking and soccer. Catherine also loves reading (the Holy Bible and lately Malcolm Gladwell’s books), traveling, having coffee with girlfriends, and of course, shopping for shoes. And finally, Catherine especially loves spending quality time with her husband, John. Special dates with him consist of quick dips at the beach, taking walks, and spending the day at the racetrack watching him race his car. Catherine feels blessed to have a godly husband, her salvation, and her CCK Ohana. Grateful for all that God has done for her, she looks forward to the future plan God has for her life in Christ.
